

Various Methods of
Vipaśyanā Meditation

Although there are different ways of establishing vipaśyanā meditation according to the different systems of sūtra, tantra, and so forth. Generally speaking, a person who has attained śamatha has primarily accomplished mental stability. However, if that person lacks the wisdom to discriminate against the object of observation, the state of meditation will not advance, and subtle meditative stabilization will not be attained. Therefore, the second step is to cultivate vipaśyanā.
For beings like us, the ability to reverse the desires of the human realm and reach an even more subtle state must be attained through vipaśyanā. Since this is not an ultimate level, vipaśyanā methods make it even more subtle. We will identify and introduce those. Also, we will introduce the different types of vipaśyanā through the different views and meditations of sūtra, tantra, mahāmudrā, mahā-atii (Dzogchen), and so forth.
When one becomes accustomed to meditating on vipaśyanā, the four self-liberating qualities of bliss, clarity, non-thought, and self-liberation arise. Just as the moon, planets, and stars naturally appear in clear water, when people become familiar with vipaśyanā, meditative experiences and realizations arise. To find the unerring path, one must engage in unerring training of this knowledge.
